“Breath I,” a collaboration with Jennifer Torrence, is an interlude from Breath/Carries/Ritual, a concert-length interdisciplinary project. In this piece, the length of each musical phrase is directly connected to the length of a single inhale and exhale cycle. As the musical material grows denser, the Torrence negotiates between rationing her breath and shaping the musical events, letting neither one lead the other but having them equally influence the sounding result.
