Program Notes
In this piece, I seek convergences in the differing sonic worlds of percussion and flute. In Part 1, a spacious opening, with a bath of airy flute tones and soft, finger tremolos on drums, gives way to a contracting metric scheme whose shorter time frames push the duo towards more angularity and percussiveness. Part 2 reintroduces temporal expansiveness. Its partially-open notation invites players to "consider time to be at the service of the sonic gestures." Moreover, the open notation asks players to respond to, engage with, and even to complete, each other's sounds.
